James McCloud

James McCloud was born in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio on Nov. 27, 1822; his father died when he was about 3 years of age; after the death of his father, his mother moved to Vermillion County, Indiana, where she married, and then removed to Jolier, Ill., in 1830, and to Van Buren County, Ia in 1837.
In the fall of 1839, James became employed by the American Fur Co. and was engaged in trading on the frontier until 1844; he came to Mineral Point, WI in August of 1844, and to the Town of Lodi in the fall of1845.
He married Catherine E. Bartholomew, daughter of G.M. Bartholomew. they have had five children, four of whom are living- James W., Elizabeth, now Mrs.R.W. Jones, of Iowa County, WI; Joseph B. and George; their daughter, Clara J., aged 19 years, a student of Lawrence University, Appleton, WI, and just ready to graduate, was drowned in Lake Buttes des Mortes, on June 10, 1871.
James McCloud has been engaged in the Mercantile business since 1851; has been very successful in business; has been in the lumber trade; is also a land owner, and has been extensively engaged in farming for many years; and is now engaged quite extensively in stock-raising and fish culture.
